Welcome to my Crafty Corner.
Today's card is inspired by Altenew Academy's "In the Mood for Color" class, offered by Stephanie Klauck and Aditi Mahajan. Stephanie offered color definitions and the feelings associated with each color. Aditi came in at the end and defined her favorite color and demonstrated two amazing projects.
WOW! This class was amazing. I thought this was going to be a color theory class. I was pleasantly surprised and glad that I was wrong!
This class is all about what colors mean and the feelings they invoke.
Turquoise = Peace ,Tranquility, Balance
I chose turquoise as my color for today's card. My family and I enjoy "cruising" to the turquoise waters of the Eastern Caribbean. We love everything about cruising, especially the spectacular ocean views from our stateroom balcony. It is so tranquil and peaceful sipping morning coffee outside on the balcony or outside in one of many common areas on the ship.
Today's card is comprised of different shades of Turquoise and Yellow/Orange (opposite on the color wheel) - a little bit of color theory here.
My original idea was to create a gate fold card with the intent of a pleasant surprise inside. However, I had a piece of acetate on my desk and I thought it could represent the protective plexi-glass that we see on the stateroom balcony.
Supply List
Altenew stamp wheel/sticky mat; Fresh Dye Inks: Snapdragon, Teal Cave, Matcha Tea, Green Opal; Mini and Detail Blending Brushes; Cardstock: Butter Cream, Dew Drops, Aqualicious, Grass Fields, brushed gold; Elegant Flourish Embossing Folder and Stencils; Creative Labels and Dies; Ornamental Poppies Layering Die Set.
From my stash: clear heavy acetate
Trim a piece of Aqualicious Cardstock to 8 1/2" x 5 1/2 and score at 4 1/4" to create a side fold card base.
Trim the front panel of the card base in half - 2 1/8" and set the trimmed piece aside.
Card Base
Elegant Flourish EF - open the card base and emboss using the bottom of the EF as we only want to emboss the front panel that we cut in half. Emboss the small panel that was set aside. Ink Blend both embossed panels with the coordinating stencils using Matcha Tea and Green Opal Inks. I used both small and detail blending brushes to create interest.
Trim the acetate to 4" x 5 1/5 and adhere to the front of the card base. Adhere the small embossed panel to the back of the card base as shown below.
Florals
Ornamental Poppies Layering Die Set - die cut the greenery with the Grass Fields c/s. Die cut all the florals twice - from Butter Cream and Dew Drops c/s. Die cut the floral centers twice with brushed gold c/s.
Ink Blend the Butter Cream florals with Snapdragon Ink and the Dew Drops with Teal Cave Inks.
I chose bold coordinating ink colors to create dimension with the florals. I applied to the centers with the mini blending brush and then created the ruffles with the detail blending brush. Assemble the florals and add the brushed gold centers.
Tips
- arrange the die cuts on the sticky mat and use the key holes to group the floral elements
- use the layering guide as it is helpful - this die set has a QR code that you can scan for additional inspiration
- choose an ink color a few shades or more darker than the c/s color as the ink dries back lighter
- ink blend with a light touch, work in layers and take your time
- to create ruffles, start at the top and flick the detail brush downward toward the center and follow the die cut design
Place the green die cut piece onto the sticky mat. Apply Opal Green ink with a mini blending tool to areas that you want darker.
Sentiment
Altenew Creative Labels Stamp and Die Set
Stamp the Thank You with SnapDragon ink onto Butter Cream c/s and die cut.
Die cut the label twice with Butter Cream c/s - need 2 labels.
Stamp the label outline with Snapdragon Ink onto both die cuts using the stamp wheel.
Assembly
When using Acetate, it is important to make the back of the panel look "finished".
Example: The sentiment label is placed so that half is adhered to the acetate. When you open the card, you can see the back of the label along with the adhesive.
I fixed this unsightly mess by adding the extra label we die cut/stamped to the back side. Now it looks finished. Small touches like this can make a big difference in the overall card design.
- Adhere the greenery to the back panel
- strategically place the florals onto the back panel so they show through the acetate nicely and also look nice when the card is open.
- place the florals onto the front and play with the composition inside and out until you find it pleasing.
- adhere all the floral elements after the previous step is completed.
