Hello Everyone!
Welcome to my Crafty Corner. This post completes my Level 2 class requirement. I have completed 20 Altenew Academy classes for the Educator Certification Program!
My next post will be the Level 2 Challenge!
Today's card is inspired by Altenew Academy's "Masking Unleashed" class offered by Svitlana Shayevich. In this class, Svitlana showed us many different techniques and products where masking can be utilized in our cardmaking projects. She covers everything from clean and simple to messy mixed media.
Today's mixed media card features a shimmery one layer background using masks and ink blending to create depth and texture.
Supplies
Altenew: Crispy Leaves Die Set; Fresh Flowers Die Set (Leaf Cluster); Lovely Flowers Press Plates (Hello Sentiment); Andromeda Fresh Dye Ink; Small Ink Blending Tool; masking paper; Stellar Sequins - Sparkling Gold 5mm, 6mm, 8mm; Antique Gold Pigment Ink; Mini Ink Blending Tool
From my stash: Vicki Boutin White Mixed Media Paper; Lindy's Stampgang Autumn Leaves Magicals set, Bayou Boogie Gold, Milky Way White; heat tool; Water Spray Bottle, Liquid Glue, Vellum, A2 card base, Gold Embossing powder; splat box, anti static powder tool; Spellbinder's Better Press
Tips
- take your time and enjoy the process
- bright white paper works well as water media is translucent
- watercolor or a sturdy mixed media paper works best as we use a lot of water
Instructions
Background
- Vicki Boutin's mixed media paper pad is 12"x12"
- cut one 12" x 12" panel in half, then in half again = 2 6" x 6" panels
- place the panels in a splat box or something that will help contain the splatters
- use a dry paint brush to sprinkle the Lindy's pigments onto both panels - I used all 5 colors in the Autumn Leaves Magical Set
- spray a generous amount of water onto both panels - lift the wet panels to mix the colors
- dry with a heat tool or air dry completely
- use a dry paint brush to sprinkle the Gold and White Magicals onto the panels
- spray with water until the pigments are dissolved
- dry with a heat tool or air dry completely
- trim each panel to 4 1/4'" x 5 1/2" - set the excess aside - we will use it later
Masking
- die cut Crispy Leaves Dies with masking paper - twice = 6 leaves
- die cut large leaf cluster - Fresh Flowers Dies - twice = 2 leaf clusters
- remove back of masking paper and place on the panel - small leaves
- Andromeda Ink - use a small blending brush and blend ink over and around the masks - just enough so that the leaf images pop.
- carefully remove the masks
- repeat on the second panel
- Leaf clusters - remove back of masking paper
- place each cluster over the previous ink blended leaves so they overlap
- Andromeda Ink - blend over and around the masked areas just enough so the images pop
- carefully remove masks
- repeat on the second panelrem
- remove masks and ......
- look at the depth this technique creates
- Antique Gold Pigment Ink - ink around the edges of both panels with a mini blending tool
Finishing touches:
- cut an 8" x 1 1/4" strip of vellum
- place the Hello sentiment onto the better press magnetic plate
- ink with Antique Gold Pigment Ink
- figure out where you want the sentiment to go on the vellum strip
- adhere the vellum strip to the plastic plate and run through the better press
- remove the vellum, apply gold embossing powder, carefully melt the powder with heat tool (it is helpful to heat the tool first prior to melting the powder as it takes less time for the powder to melt)
- Another way to add the sentiment: You could also use a sentiment stamp, ink with the gold pigment ink, apply gold embossing powder and melt with heat tool
- place the vellum strip over the panel, decide where you want it to go, fold the excess vellum around to the back of panel, crease with a bone folder and adhere with liquid glue
- the above step prevents glue from showing through the vellum
- adhere the panel to an A2 card base with liquid glue
